Philosophy Forum Series Online for Fall 2022 Opening Presentation set for Sept. 14

Dr. Stephen AsmaDr. Stephen Asma, professor of philosophy at Columbia College (Chicago) will present 鈥淭hinking about Monsters: A Philosophy of Horror and Vulnerability鈥 Wednesday, Sept.14at 6:30 p.m. in the opening lecture for SWAG视频鈥檚 (SWAG视频) online Philosophy Forum for fall 2022. His presentation, supported by the SWAG视频 Foundation and Fairchild Lecture Funds, will be available via Zoom and based in part on his 2009 book On Monsters: an Unnatural History of Our Worst Fears (Oxford University Press).

Asma was a 2014 Fulbright Scholar at Beijing Foreign Studies University and a 2018 recipient of a Henry Luce Foundation grant. His research includes study of friendship in the digital age. He is the author of 10 books, and his writing is also regularly featured in the New York Times, the Chronicle of Higher Education and Aeon magazine; he is often sought by media outlets for his expertise on a wide range of topics.

At Columbia College, Asma is also a fellow in its Research Group in Mind, Science and Culture, and has been an invited lecturer worldwide, including at Harvard University, Brown University, the University of Chicago, the University of Amsterdam, and at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, among many other venues. In addition to his academic work, Asma previously was a professional musician, playing with such musical legends as Bo Diddley and Buddy Guy.
