Alyssa Shaw, a doctoral candidate in Polymer Science and Engineering, captured the Grand Champion award during SWAG视频鈥檚 (SWAG视频) annual Three-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT庐) held November 1 at the Hattiesburg campus.

Shaw won $1,000 for her entry: 鈥淒oped Polymer Thin Films: A Pathway to Tune Properties for Flexible Electronics.鈥

The runner-up award and $750 cash prize went to Amy Coronado, a doctoral candidate in Polymer Science and Engineering for her entry: 鈥淗eat is the Key: Unlocking Dynamic Bonds for Animate Polymer Network Materials.鈥

Madeline Klubertanz, a master鈥檚 candidate in Kinesiology (Exercise Science), took home the People鈥檚 Choice Award for her entry: 鈥淗ow Cushion and Support Could Save Us Millions.鈥

鈥淭he Three Minute Thesis Competition is the premier fall event of the Graduate School,鈥 said Dr. Katie Anthony, SWAG视频 Graduate School dean. 鈥淲e were thrilled to have many excellent students representing their graduate programs and our institution so well.鈥

More than two dozen SWAG视频 graduate students competed in this year鈥檚 event. As part of the competition, participants are required to explain their thesis or dissertation in a three-minute presentation; effectively communicating the complexity of their topic and research to a non-academic audience.

Other finalists in the competition included:

  • Matt Martin 鈥 Communication, Ph.D., 鈥淚mage Identity Exchange鈥
  • Michael Oeth 鈥 Biological Sciences, M.S., 鈥淯nderstanding the Stressed Immune System of the European Honeybee (Apis Mellifera) Via Immunosuppressants鈥
  • Godspower Okeke 鈥 Biological Sciences, Ph.D., 鈥淭racking NIPP1: How a Tiny Protein Shapes the Fate of Mouse Eggs鈥

  • Brittany Garza 鈥 School Psychology, Ph.D., 鈥淪ocial Sprouts: A Play-Based Packaged Intervention鈥

鈥淲e are so proud of all of our 3MT庐 competitors, and we look forward to cheering on Alyssa Shaw, our grand champion, as she competes at the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools in March against the winners from other institutions across the southeast,鈥 said Anthony.鈥
